Trailer Trash

Oh what fun it is to ride....in an old beat up trailer with an empty water bottle and some left over dirt. Grant was appropriately enthused on the ride from from the road back into the driveway. Who needs a wagon? You can't pretend you're surfing in a wagon.
Just cleaning out the trailer the old fashioned way - one handful at a time.

A 90° day calls for a good squirt in they eye, and a chance to soak your brother. It didn't do anything for covering up the mishap cutting Grant's hair today, though. See the little chunk missing in the back? He doesn't have much patience for the whole thing, and just starts throwing his head around.
This is a great place to run and hide to avoid a water fight. (Or just to find some interesting bugs to eat.)
On the deck front (or top, I guess you could say) is Pop putting up the beams for the cover (with UV protection for the pasty white boys.)

The Maiden Voyage

We introduced the boys to the new deck this morning. Initial response was very positive. Notice the Plexiglas behind Grant. The first thing both boys did was to run up to the Plexiglas and push on it. I'm not sure if they were just trying to leave hand prints or do a quick safety check of the Plexiglas.

Here's Cole saying how impressed he is while Grant gestures his amazement.

Later we had a fashion show with Dad's knee pad.

And Cole demonstrated his teasing face. This is the actual face he makes when you look at him while he teases. We see it a lot in our house.

The boys stayed home from church today, coughing their heads off. They both got good naps and woke up in happy moods. I went to Sacrament meeting and Sunday school and then came home while Ma went and taught her Laurels.

Deck the House - Episode 4 - "Beta Release"

Today I got the deck to the point where we can start letting the boys out to play on it; that is, I put in all of the floorboards, the hand rails and balusters. There is still a lot of finishing work to do and I am going to add an awning over the whole thing so we can use it when it rains.

Here's a shot when I had about half of the balusters on the east side done:

And here's as I was doing the balusters on the west side.

On the north side, I decided to try Plexiglas instead of balusters. But it was too dark by the time I got it done to get a photo.

Ma spent the day renovating the landscape on the west side of our house. It used to be an unruly patch of roses but Ma tore most of them out a while back and it's just been kind of weedy and bare. She dug out several wheelbarrow loads of dirt and added most of a cubic yard of 4-way potting soil, rototilling over it several times. Then she moved several of the large Boston ferns that were behind the house into the area.
Ma Moving Fern

Here's a before view:

And an after view:

The boys have been sick for several days and they're phlegmy and generally cranky, especially Grant. He'd be happy to just be held all day long if I were available and had the stamina. But once he gets outside and starts playing he almost forgets that he's sick.

I think Cole is almost back to normal. Tonight he kept making silly faces whenever I'd look at him. He's such a little tease! As I was working on the deck he would come and stand at the sliding glass door to watch and if I hadn't closed it all the way he would reach his arm through the opening as if to dare me to grab him. It's a game the boys play with me when I'm going to work and they're standing at the top of the stairs.

Cole has started doing a funny thing when he runs. He puts both arms behind him, as if he's going so fast the wind resistance is causing his arms to flap behind. Maybe he thinks it's aerodynamic and it'll help him to stay faster than Grant.

As bedtime approached, both boys just about fell asleep on the floor. Grant drank a little milk and then curled up with his blanket, sucking on a tassel like he does when it's bedtime. I put him in his crib and he was practically asleep before I finished tucking him in. Speaking of which, it's past my bedtime.

Screwed Up

Ma is at some Relief Society function tonight so I was planning to make some serious progress on the deck. I was going along just fine until I ran out of screws. Since I'm here alone with the sleeping boys I can't just run out and get some (well, maybe I could, but how would I explain the new box of screws to Ma when she gets back? Or what if she got back while I was gone?) Instead, I decided to see what they were up to today by downloading the pictures off of the camera. The following is a reconstruction of events as pictured on photos taken today.

It was a lovely spring day in the northwest. Grant was sitting out by the playhouse.

Cole joined him and Tucker the kitty came by to say hello. It was an idyllic scene one might find in a Norman Rockwell painting.

But alas, danger lurked on the horizon. Cole saw it first and couldn't believe such a thing could mar this beautiful day.

He quickly called to order an emergency meeting of the secret boys' club. Dad was at work but he and Grant are enough to conduct emergency business. First, of course, the secret handshake...

..and again with the other hands.

Finally, the cause of this commotion: a pink hat! It's definitely not a boy hat. It's presence signified that a girl must have been in the area. Where is this girl now? Is the hat infested with cooties?

Grant wanted fumigate it but Cole thought they should find the owner and return it, maybe earning smooches in the process.

"Meeting adjourned!" shouted the boys, and Cole headed off to search out smooches.

Later it was determined that the hat belongs to their cousin, and kissing a cousin is just gross.

No kitties were harmed in the reconstruction of this episode.

Basket Case

Grant and Cole have a special love for getting into things (in many ways). The laundry basket seems to be about the best size, however......the process of both getting in can be a little hazardous. Grant is less aware of the discomfort, of course we've always known he has a hard time understanding "personal space" boundaries. He's more of a "full contact" kind of kid.
So Cole is usually the one who has to leave since he gets fed up the most. How do you solve a problem like a Grant? (I don't want to write a whole song about it, but Cole can be just as unbearable to Grant in other ways - like how he always steals things and runs away. He knows Grant can't catch him.)
Anyway, I did a comprehensive study to determine motives in basket dwelling. The results were immediate and conclusive: Even when each boy was given their own basket, Grant was unsatisfied until he was in the same one with Cole.
Sorry, Cole. That's brotherly love-live with it.On deck news, some braces were added for stability, and several boards were screwed down on the top. It's fun to walk around on it and pretend we have a real deck. Pop is truly incredible when it comes to this stuff. I'm not sure how he seems to know exactly what to do even though he's never done this before, but he's very thorough in making sure everything is perfect. Everyone should be happy to know this when you're standing on it 10 ft above the ground, eating your hamburger.

Deck the House - Episode 3 - "Now Let Us Re-joist"

Our deck project has been on hold for several days while Sue's brother and family were here. Now I can get back to business. Time to finish the joists.
I cut away 29 inches of siding from the house, attached the ledger board to the house with some long lag bolts and hung the last two joists.
I also went back to the joists I hung last week and added another lag bolt to each one to further secure the new joists to the existing joists. I still need to use some hurricane ties to secure the new joists to the beam. We don't get many hurricanes here in the northwest but we do have a volcano. Of course, they don't make volcano ties. I figure hurricane ties'll have to do. I also am going to add some perpendicular blocks to keep the joists from twisting. After that, I can start adding the deck boards!

Puddle Pushers

Every year, about this time, the sun starts showing up more regularly and it's bitter-sweet. We love that it doesn't rain EVERY day, anymore, but it means that in another month it will stop raining entirely, and the lush green will fade. The lawn turns brown, we have to start watering the garden, it gets miserably hot (80-90°), and it doesn't smell nearly as good around here. So on a rainy day like today (since it will be sunny the rest of the week) we had to get in some good puddle time. We'll especially miss the rain now that Cole has disabled most of our drip system. (Once all the lights were taken apart, he had to move on.) One may wonder, "what's his mom doing all the time he's taking everything apart? Can't he be stopped?" Well, for one thing, she's too busy taking pictures. For another thing, once something grabs his attention nothing short of locking him in the house will stop him from tinkering with it. He's a little on the obsessive side.
Grant likes to cover all bodies of water, no matter how small or large (including the cats' water dish.) All must be splashed, no exceptions, so he keeps on the move. Notice the rain pants (created by Mom & Co.)
We had a lesson on "team work" and practiced pushing the stroller up our entire road. I'm not sure why this is so exhilarating to them, but by the end they were exhausted, and too far from home for walking.
So they had a nice comfy ride home with grapes and blankies.

Sons of Beaches

Today we went to the coast. The boys had never been to the ocean before, or to the Tillamook Cheese Factory.
We hit the cheese factory first. The best thing about cheese factory is, of course, the cheese samples at the end of the tour. The boys love cheese. I think it's genetic. Cousin Pooh seemed pretty happy to be there too.
We ate lunch in the cheese factory cafe. Grilled cheese, of course. Grant also got his first taste of potato chips. I think he likes them. We left Tillamook and headed north along the coast to Rockaway Beach. Cole got so excited when he saw all that water that he started running towards it, when we were still a long way off. But he kept running... and running (the wrong way)... and running... ...until he finally made it to the water. When Grant got to the water, he promptly stepped into the first puddle he found. And since it wasn't enough that his feet got wet, he got down and got a little more intimately acquainted with it. Keep in mind that there was a stiff breeze blowing, the air temperature was less than 60° and the water was probably closer to 45° Everything was going great until a small "sneaker wave" came in and knocked both boys down and immersed them in the frigid water. That ended our beach activities for the day.
After a change of clothing the boys played near the car while their cousins continued to play on the beach. Grant found a rock that he liked.
Of course, the only thing better than an interesting rock....
...is two interesting rocks.
Grant wins the photo of the day with his sporty football shot in a shop near the beach.
