No Accounting for Taste

I don't remember what we were eating and I guess it doesn't really matter. Grant wasn't thrilled with it but he found a novel way to eat it. I suppose it's less offensive (but also less effective) than holding his nose. Note in this next picture that he's stirring his chocolate milk to wash it all down with. Now there's a strategy I can identify with.

Roto-Ruster

It's springtime in the northwest and that means time for gardening. Last week I tried to wheel our rototiller out of the shed. It was in neutral but the wheels wouldn't budge. I started the engine and tried to put it in gear but the gear shifter wouldn't budge either. Finally, I dragged it into the garage and took it apart. I knew it was a bad sign when, as soon as I broke the seal on the gear box, reddish brown water dribbled out onto the floor. It's not quite as bad as it looks. After I started wiping the rusty residue away from the various gears I found that most of them were in good shape. The sliding gear that actually transfers power was the worst. I scraped and filed and sanded and chiseled at it until the outer gear would slide freely. Then I cleaned out the old grease and packed all of the gears back in with new grease. It was then that I wished that I had been a little more methodical about organizing the various nuts, bolts and pieces when I was disassembling it. In spite of it all, I got it back together without serious mishap and, more importantly, without any leftover mystery parts. And amazingly enough, it actually works! I got the garden tilled and we'll be planting in no time. Anybody want some zucchini?

Mmmm, Gruel...

Baby's first bite. And the verdict is...
...about the same as the boys' first time. Hmmm, we still see those faces some days at mealtime.

Crabby Days are Here Again!

Last weekend we traveled up to my sister's home. All three of my sisters, five nieces and my mom were in town doing the Twilight vampire tour. We arrived, regrettably (not), too late to make it out to Forks with them, but we did make it down to the water to look for crabs. All of the crabs we saw were small, especially these hermit crabs. The boys seemed to enjoy the hunt, even though crabs really weren't hard to find. Naturally, we posed for the obligatory group shot.

Our Easter Egg-straveganza!

What an amazing concept: colorful plastic eggs full of candy (most of them, anyway). What boy wouldn't have his best smile ready for the occasion? We also decorated eggs with the boys. Naturally, it quickly devolved into an egg mashing party. My favorite moment of the night was when Grant asked me where the Silly Putty was. Sorry, wrong type of egg.

Bryn & Grandpa

Speaking of Bryn, here's a little video from our trip to Idaho last month. I think they speak the same language.

I 1 the Sandbox

Loyal readers of our blog will recall that last September we built a sandbox in our backyard. Because we have two cats, not to mention other even less desirable neighborhood critters, we have tried to keep the sandbox covered with a tarp when it was not in use. So our first outdoor project of the season is an enclosure for the sandbox.

The boys love noisy power tools. (And yes, I am one of the boys.) Here's the finished product in use on the beautiful 70° Saturday we experienced today. Of course, the boys were thrilled to be able to rediscover all of the things from our yard. Grant began adding to the pile of wood in the play house. Cole made an appearance as well but he was more interested in being silly than moving logs. Although he did put the swing through its paces. And there's no better way to end a beautiful day than with popcorn and a movie with your best friend.

Two Little Hands

When they're not folded snugly and tight... ..they might be digging in the dirt... ... or getting slammed in a door by a careless twin brother... ... or somehow, mysteriously, getting covered with purple and orange marker. "I don't know how it happened, Dad!" I'm guessing the left hand knew exactly what the right hand was doing... and vice versa.

Plenty, indeed, for these two hands to do.

Full Contact Bowling

Let her rip!
The victory dance.
There's so much anticipation and suspense in bowling! (And bonked heads!)
You never know what's going to happen....
Expecially when there's a "jump ball."
Maybe we should call it "basketbowl." Hahaha....I'm so funny.

Thanks for introducing us the the world of bowling, Jayce! (Jayce - in the sweater, is our best buddy, neighbor, and our Thomas the Tank Engine club president.)

Brynie's Perfect Day

1 - Met my new cousin at the hospital (Carly Austin - born March 15, perfect timing for our trip to Idaho.) I also met Uncle Brad (Mom's Brother) and a whole bunch of other people claiming to be related to me. But Carly...now there's someone I can relate to.
2 - Grandma gave me hugs.
3 - Grandpa made me laugh.
4 - We went to McKee's Pet & Garden, and petting zoo (Mom's first job when she was 16.)
5 - I finally felt safe when the outlaws were behind bars.

Temple Squares

Another difference between boys and girls: Girls like looking at fountains. Boys look for ways to fall into the fountain. Even if you can get a girl on the edge... ...it's a boy who'll try to reach a little too far. Many thanks to our friends Missy Moo and Apple for helping us illustrate this point. Fortunately, no toddlers were dunked while taking these pictures. We had more important things to look at. Ever since this, the boys have been talking about how the bad guys hurt Jesus. Of course, few things can compete with the excitement of seeing a real fire truck at work. Someone had spilled oil on the road so two trucks and a dozen men were dispatched to clean it up. Naturally, looking at a fire truck isn't as exciting as touching a fire truck. Gotta love those flashing lights. Thanks for coming down from Wyoming to visit us on our trip! In lieu of hugs, how about a quick poke with a stick?

Bountiful Activities

Run Grant! Run Cole! Stop to throw some snow, Grant. Stop to throw some snow, Cole. Now everyone dip their hands in the frigid fountain water and...
... make a...
... hand print on the bench, Grant. Make a ...
... hand print on the bench, Cole.
Try not to fall in, please. Now run on the snow, Cole. Run on the snow, Grant. Okay, now why are we playing around at the Bountiful Temple? Oh yeah, Sue's former roommate Kara got married! Congratulations.
