Pajama Party on Deck

My sister, Minerva, came by to visit last Saturday. They were headed down to San Diego where her husband will be doing super secret things to US Navy vessels. Minerva and the girls will mostly be going to Sea World and doing not-so-secret things with fish tacos.
To be honest, not much really happened while they were here but we took a few pictures of the girls playing on the deck.
And here's a great photo of Cole making manly faces while he holds a tool.

Finally, there has been much ado made about the bed and breakfast service we apparently provide our guests. Ma's scones, in particular, are the subject of frequent adulation and excessive drooling. Here is the recipe for:

Ma's Famous Bakery Style Scones

2 C flour
¼ C sugar
1½ tsp cream of tartar
3/4 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
Mix all of the above
Mix in ½ C very soft butter
Finally add ½ C buttermilk (1 tsp vinegar in milk works)

Dough should be sort of "goopy", just right for mixing in fruit, like strawberries or frozen raspberries, and white chocolate chips. Place globs on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes. Once they cool a bit, drizzle with melted white chocolate or frosting. Eat, repeat until too full to walk.

Here's a picture of what they might look like before cooking. We don't have any pictures after cooking because they don't survive long enough for conventional photographic equipment to capture.
It is also possible to roll the dough about 1/2 inch thick and cut out triangles. In another variation, Ma got some cinnamon chips somewhere and she usually sets aside some dough before adding the fruit and makes them with cinnamon chips instead. Now someone has to come visit so that she'll make them for us.

Ooooh! Secret family bakery secrets revealed. Except for the ambiance of Vancouver and Washington trees, etc, we will finally be able to attempt scones on our own. I think the Washington Simper ambiance has a lot to do with how good they taste. Thanks for the pictures of the Bucketheads and the manly tool scowl.

And we shall visit, and we shall consume scones and all shall rejoice.

HBO has been wanting me to make these...Now I have no excuse not to. I actually dreamed last night that I made them, and they were disappointingly-not-as-good as those made by "Ma". :(
